BMW Motorrad has unveiled the M 1000 XR globally, marking the brand's 3rd M motorcycle and a turbocharged version of none other than the 2024 S 1000 XR, that is also making its debut alongside it. Both bikes share a 999 cc engine, but the M 1000 XR offers more power due to various performance augmentations. The M variant also sports several cosmetic changes and spare equipment compared to the S 1000 XR. Currently, these motorcycles are exclusively available in global markets.

For 2024, the S 1000 XR receives a few minimal cosmetic updates compared to its afore launched variant. These changes are done to match the bike’s overall body colour. The changes include the inclusion of a front fender and new rear side panels. The motorcycle's seat is now 10 mm extra heighted, offering greater comfort for extended rides. Other updates for the S 1000 XR include fresh colour options and advanced graphics.

In contrast, the M 1000 XR looks like the wicked twin of the S 1000 XR, featuring a black color scheme and distinctive M-specific livery. The bike comes equipped with lightweight aluminum wheels and M winglets, designed to enhance downforce. While the M 1000 XR reserves the similar 6.5-inch digital instrument cluster as is given in the S 1000 XR, it showcases distinct animations for startup and the rev counter. Customers looking to buy the bike also have the option to choose the M Competition Package, which shaves off three kilograms by incorporating additional M-Carbon components like the wheels, chain guard, front fender, and side panels, among others.

When it comes to the mechanical aspects, both motorcycles are equipped with an upside-down fork at the front and a double-sided swing arm at the rear, which can be adjusted electronically on both ends. The M 1000 XR stands out with Dynamic Damping Control (DDC), which automatically adapts the suspension to suit various riding conditions. However, in terms of braking, the M 1000 XR boasts M brakes with a radial hand brake pump, featuring a 320 mm twin-disc setup at the front and a 265 mm single-disc setup at the rear. In contrast, the S 1000 XR uses a similar 320 mm twin-disc brake setup at the front and a smaller 220 mm single-disc setup at the rear. Both bikes come with standard features like lean-sensitive ABS, traction control, cruise control, and wheelie control. The M 1000 XR also offers a brake slide assist function, allowing riders to brake-drift into corners, along with launch control and a pit lane limiter function.

Under the hood, both motorcycles are powered by a 999 cc inline-4 engine, shared with several other BMW models. However, the M 1000 XR produces 199 bhp, which is 31 bhp more than the S 1000 XR, thanks to shorter gear ratios, an optimized air intake, a lighter exhaust system, and a higher redline of 14,600 rpm. Both bikes feature a 6-speed gearbox with a bi-directional quickshifter. The S 1000 XR offers four ride modes: Rain, Road, Dynamic, and Dynamic Pro, while the M 1000 XR goes a step further with an additional Race Pro mode.
